Calculator notes

How the numbers work

What does this calculator do?

+

It projects how a starting lump sum plus regular monthly contributions might grow over a chosen number of years at an assumed annual return, with monthly compounding. The result is a single projected balance at the end of the horizon, alongside the total contributed and the implied investment growth. It is a sense-check, not a forecast and not a recommendation.

What return assumption should we use?

+

That depends on the asset mix and the horizon. Historical long-run real (after inflation) returns from a globally diversified equity portfolio sit around 4% to 5% per year over rolling 20-year periods. Cash savings real returns sit closer to 0%. A balanced 60/40 equity-bond portfolio sits between those two. The calculator default of 5% is in line with a long-run equity assumption, but actual returns vary year by year and can be negative; periods of poor returns lasting a decade or more have happened. Treat the figure as an illustration, not a promise.

Does the calculator include fees, taxes or inflation?

+

No. The result is a gross nominal projection, before any platform charges, fund ongoing charges, or adviser fees, and before income tax or capital gains tax. It also does not adjust for inflation; a £100,000 balance in 30 years buys less than £100,000 today. To estimate the real value, subtract roughly 2% per year of expected inflation from the return assumption before running the projection. To estimate the after-fee value, subtract the all-in annual fees (typically 0.2% to 0.5% on self-directed passive, 1.5% to 2.5% on fully advised) from the return assumption.
